For decades we have been pumping all these hydrocarbons into our atmosphere and now we are on the brink of a global disaster. Now almost everyone understands that something must change, and pronto! As for myself, well, I don’t have a car and live on a (as I see it) bare bones budget; so what can I do as an individual? Moreover, what can we all do as individuals for one another? To start, it all begins with where you live.

My house is basically a Cracker Box quasi-suburban model; one of those built after WW2; probably the very latest in efficient living, then — but now? Hardly! So, what do I do now? Certainly just changing over to more efficient light bulbs and lowering the thermostat are not enough.

The costs of every necessary commodity are so outrageous these days that the only practical thing to do is to plan ahead, and that means making a small investment in the present. Ah, but the present denotes that one act in the immediate. That wasn’t a riddle..lol

So, what could be more immediate and (well) efficient, than the web? After all it is worldwide (or so I’m told). Thus, taking into account that the energy crisis not only effects me and my cat (though, she’ll never tell), but the planet; putting one and the other together + what my ultimate objective was and is, I Googled ‘Efficient Energy’. Of course, I had to slog through a couple hundred ads and various fragmented posts before arriving at Efficient Planet.com.

To make a long story short: given, the inefficiency of my own (and cat’s) domicile, I thought that looking into Solar Paneling might be the direction to go (I don’t have the backyard space for a windmill or Nuclear Power Plant). Apparently, I was correct in my somewhat random choice of the Efficient Planet site. We have great exposure to the sun here (cat upon her window-sil, especially) and I am kind of a D.I.Y. person, so the Efficient Planet e-book: ‘ConvertYour Home to Solar Power’ was really a welcome surprise.

However, as opposed to all those other build-it-yourself ‘talk fast/ see you later infomercial TV spots, Efficient Planet’s ‘Convert Your Home to Solar Power’ is a seriously explicable guide to building and installing your own solar panels and power generators. It is systematic, and has great illustrations, and schematics, to boot!

Not to say, that it is all so easy to convert; there is some labor involved, and I can tell you from experience: your cat will be of no assistance at all! That is unless your plan is to install a scratching post, rather than solar paneling on your roof.

Nonetheless, if you are stuck with ever increasing and decidedly unreasonable home energy costs, like I have been (I won’t count my cat in the mix — for now, anyway), to that degree where you are just about to give up the place, then, by all means do check out the Efficient Planet line of e-book titles, not just ‘Convert Your Home to Solar Power’, but the others, as well.

…brought to you by Efficient Planet

Buy a power strip!

Did you know that your appliances use electricity even when they are turned off? It’s called a phantom load, or vampire power. As much as 75 percent of the electricity used to power home electronics and small appliances is used while they’re turned off, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The Ohio Consumers Council estimates that it costs consumers $40 to $100 a year.

The simple solution is to unplug small appliances and electronics when you aren’t using them. Or plug them into a power strip and turn the power strip off when you aren’t using those items. Power strips cost $10 to $20 each and can save you up to $100 a year, depending on how many electronics you have. Simply unplugging one television, computer monitor and fax machine when you aren’t using it will save you about $6 a month.

Tips and tricks from HGTV for going green:

A two-stroke, gasoline-powered lawn mower releases as many hydrocarbons into the atmosphere in 30 minutes as a car does in 90 minutes. Switch to an electric mower.

An LCD flat panel TV uses as little as a third of the electricity of conventional tube-based models.

Buying organic produce grown within 100 miles of your home will help reduce the amount of diesel fuel needed to ship food.

If you feel woozy after painting with latex-based enamel, choose a product low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) instead. New designer colors and improved quality make these safer paints.

Manufacturers of low-flow toilets use advanced computer modeling to deliver more flush power with less water.

Like to linger in a hot shower? Stand under the pulse jet guilt-free with a solar hot-water system.

Replacing old light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones can trim 5 percent from your monthly electrical bill. Go for the premium fluorescents that cast a pure white or buttery golden light.

The sun is the ultimate source of solar energy. It is proven in many scientific researches that the sun is the most abundant source of energy in the earth and it benefited the whole world for free.

Solar energy has many uses that can be very useful in everyday living.

We use solar energy to light our homes- In particular rural areas wherein electricity is not available, the use of solar energy is very effective. Solar kits can light up homes and power household appliances. It can be also an effective fuel in cooking instead of wood fuel hence deforestation can be minimized.

We use solar energy in boiling water – Hot water from the sun is free. It is one of the well known benefits from solar energy. Furthermore because of the discovery of solar energy application in daily household chores, the electricity bill will reduce and the amount paid in electric bill can be added to other household needs.

We use solar energy in water pumping – It helps lessen your water bills and will set you free in trouble due to lack of water supply.

Schools, community halls and clinics use solar energy as their source of power. Television, video, telephone and other refrigeration equipment can be powered by solar energy. It benefits the community because it is free and has unlimited source.

Solar energy for recreation – Solar Power is used in consumer product applications that need small amount of energy like calculators and recreation vehicles that use rechargeable battery.

All of this benefits that the world enjoys today is due to our sun, our ultimate source of free unlimited power. We should realize how lucky we are. All what we need to survive in this world is there and the only thing we need to do is to use and take care of it.

Two significant trends have hit at the same time this year, green issues relating to reducing our carbon footprints and relying less on the world’s natural resources and the global financial crisis affecting every civilized country.

The upshot of this is that everyone is thinking about how they can do their part for the Planet and at the same time, ease their financial worries by becoming more efficient with their energy usage.

There are several ways you can reduce your energy consumption and your reliance on the suppliers whose charges go up and up every month. The most basic of these is using energy saving light bulbs and turning electrical equipment off instead of leaving on standby. The most effective solution involves creating your own power!

Two of the most popular ways of generating power at home are Wind Turbines and Solar Panels. Both are very different systems and require different local conditions, where one may not work, it is likely that the other will. It is more simple than you may think to build a Wind Turbine or a Solar Panel system from readily available materials. If you are able to use tools and follow clear instructions then you can do it.

There are several products on the market which will give you the basic guidelines and theory behind how to create these systems, but only one takes it to another level. Efficient Planet Guides have been developed by some of the most experienced experts in the field of renewable energy.

Efficient Planet is not only a guide to building a wind turbine and solar panel, it also contains a guide to efficient living which covers so many other tips, tricks, and advice to cut down your energy usage and save you money. It really is the ultimate guide to reducing your impact on the planet and money saving advice. The “How to” guides give the background behind the different renewable energy sources, they explain what materials, tools, and equipment are required and they give step by step instructions. They also make sure what ever you do, it is done safely.

If you are ready to make a difference and save the Planet or just want to reduce your electricity bills I think the Efficient Planet Guides could be a step in the right direction.

I am one of those people who was under the false impression that I was doing a decent job of being environmentally conscious.

I recycle; donate usable items I no longer want rather than tossing them in the trash; have cut way back on my gasoline usage by planning my trips, walking, biking, or just staying home; cut back on my water usage; compost; grow my own vegetables; and have planted a couple of fruit trees this spring with the hope to have my own fruits to can within the next 5 years. And, even though I have air conditioning I use it as little as possible and instead open my windows to take advantage of Mother Natures air conditioning, the breeze.

I was feeling pretty smug and confident that I was doing my share.

Then I took an ecological footprint quiz at myfootprint.org and found that even with the efforts I have made, it would still take 7.46 planets to sustain life if everyone lives the way I do. It was a wake up call for me to do a lot more. So I looked into various ways and kits to cut my electric bill more or less down to 0. The kit that worked was Efficient Planet. Not many (only a few thousand) people have heard about this. It’s pretty much a D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) kit consisting of 3 guides with plain English, simple 1-2-3 steps to make your own solar panel, windmill, etc. I’m getting off topic, so back to the story.

So I decided to focus on one area at a time with my electric usage being the first thing because I know my household uses way too much.

My efforts worked. After one month, my electric bill had gone down by 40 percent even though I had my air conditioning (which uses electricity) on part of the time.

Here is everything I did to slash my electrical usage. Check to see if there are things listed you are not doing. If not, then implement them to lower your electrical bill. It is good for your pocketbook and good for the environment.

LIGHTS OUT

I no longer leave the porch light on at night and I always turn off lights when I leave a room. I had thought I was pretty good at turning off lights but I really was not. It is easy to forget if a person is not diligent about it.

TURN OFF THE TELEVISION

I used to have the habit of leaving the television on even if I was not watching, for the noise (I’m from the city). Now I am learning to enjoy the quiet. And, I am less likely to sit down and watch television now. I read more and spend more time outside.

UNPLUG THE CHARGERS

I did not realize that my cell phone and battery chargers were using electricity even when I was not charging my phones and recharging batteries. Now I unplug them when I am not using them.

NO MORE SLEEP MODE

I no longer put my home copier, laptop computer, printer or desktop computer and monitor on sleep or energy saving mode. When I am not using them I turn them off.

UNPLUG ALL AROUND THE HOUSE

Any plug that feels warm to the touch is drawing electricity even if the item is not being used, such as small appliances and space heaters. I now make liberal use of power strips for items I do not want to have to unplug all the time, like my blender, computer, and television since they still draw a small amount of electricity even when they are turned off. It is much easier to turn a power strip off and on than to walk around unplugging things and then plugging them back in later. Yeah, maybe it is laziness but I know that I will not crawl behind the television every day to unplug it or crawl under the computer desk to unplug the computer every day, but I will flip the switch on a conveniently placed power strip.

DITCH THE CLOTHES DRYER

Clothes will last longer if they are air dried, plus it is much easier to treat stains that regular washing may have missed on clothes that were air dried versus ones dried in a dryer. I am lucky enough to have an outdoor clothesline that I use in the spring, summer, and fall, but I plan to air dry clothes inside during the winter too. My sister in law has been doing it for 20 years and she has 6 kids plus a full time job. As a bonus, the drying racks double as clothes hangers when there is not time to get the clothes folded and put away. That does not work with clothes left in the dryer. They quickly turn into a wrinkled mess if not folded or hung up.

UNPLUG THE EXTRA FRIDGE

We have always had a second refrigerator just to keep beverages cold, mostly beer. Now, instead of constantly keeping a whole case cold, which we only need once a year, we just keep a couple of cans cold in our regular fridge.

The things listed above are steps I have already taken and learned from Efficient Planet, (some are just common sense), but I know I can do more and want to do more. I like having a small electric bill!

Below is a list of more steps I plan to take.

CHANGE TO COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS

I currently only have a few compact fluorescent bulbs because of their large size, but manufacturers have been coming out with a bigger selection of sizes, so I no longer have any excuse to not swap out all my bulbs. But I am doing it slowly and only change them when the old bulbs burn out. I think it is wasteful to switch out perfectly good bulbs and to toss them in a landfill, no matter what kind of bulb it is.

BUY ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES

Do not toss perfectly good appliances though because that creates a landfill problem.

USE LOW FLOW SHOWER HEADS AND TOILETS

WASH CLOTHES IN COLD WATER

I already do this but I have a gas water heater and not an electric one so this does not save me any money on my electric bill but I have found my clothes come just as clean in cold water as in warm or hot. The only change I have made is to switch to a detergent formulated for cold water washing.

USE THE MICROWAVE INSTEAD OF THE OVEN OR STOVE

I’m on the fence about this one. I’m not to keen of microwaves but I do plan to use mine a little more. There’s just NO EXCUSE for using the oven to heat up some bread or a potato.

CLEAN AND REPLACE FILTERS REGULARLY

This includes filters humidifiers, vacuum cleaners, furnaces, air cleaners, dryers, and range exhaust hoods.

RUN THE CLOTHES WASHER AND DISHWASHER ONLY WHEN FULL
